The Decorating Mom’s Best Friend — Industrial Decor

Have you ever seen those all white decor schemes on Pinterest that look so homey and inviting? Sure you have! I LOOOOOOOOVE those pictures! They’re gorgeous and crisp and clean and make you feel like you would be at peace 100% of the time if your house looked like that. But would that design work in my house? HELL to the NO 😑 I’m currently housing a welder/millwright spouse, Tasmanian Devil toddler boy, and 5–yes, FIVE dogs, between 40-80 pounds 🙃 .  But I still want my house to look like I have at least some of my shit together. That’s where this idea of industrial decor comes into play. It’s not making your home look like a steel factory or making it a ‘thing’ to just have your things strewn all over the place (but wouldn’t that be nice? Can we make that a thing...? #momdecor) but rather bringing in pieces that give your home a little edge, so things aren’t totally noticeable to the naked eye that my house isn’t actually a wreck. And let’s be honest, I love a little edge. I love this style of home decor because it still looks cool and hip and totally up to style-but it’s still very easily made homey, and like I said-because of the mix of metal and dark wood and touches you can bring in with your own style, it gives the illusion things are cleaner vs the evident mess you would see if your house looked like your dream all white home board on Pinterest. I’ve snagged most of my furnishings from local shops and/or antique places near me, but I’ve added a few links to get similar goods for your home too!

Toys. Toys EVERYWHERE. But hey, look at that clock!

  1. Windmill clock — this was a mom find, meaning my mom snagged it somewhere and can’t tell me where! But I looooooove this clock-it’s the perfect statement piece above the mantle(I feel so adult saying that 😬) but really it is! And it really draws the eye so even with the mountain of toys and Mickey Mouse table beneath it, you’re gonna look at that clock 👌 and plus, it helps me tell time without having to check my phone—T-MINUS 2 HOURS TO BEDTIME 🚀 check out this comparable one I found on amazon!

Please disregard the dog hair on the floor--at this point I can barely keep up.
  2. Dining room table — we got this gorgeous thing at a little mom-and-pop shop down here in SoCal and I am SO GLAD we did. The dark wood + the metal makes the dining room and kitchen feel so warm and makes even my gourmet ‘we have too much food in the fridge and I don’t want to cook, we’re having leftovers’ dinners look good! Sitting next to someone on the benches is great in my opinion to really make meals at the table special. After all, that’s where families come together 🙏 I found this similar gorgeous table on amazon, or for my handy readers(or readers with handy husbands 🙋‍♀️) here’s a pin for a DIY table that looks amazing!

Fresh out of the CNC machine and grinded!
  3. Metal artwork — I was fortunate enough to actually see these be made by @acerodkustom while I was in Oregon and I can’t get enough of how COOL the whole process is! Trevor and I love Oregon and dream of owning a big cabin in the woods we can escape to whenever, so I picked this little tree duo to remind us of what we’re working towards. Fortunately they blend in perfectly with the industrial style because they’re metal AND you have the option to get them mounted on a piece of old wood! Gives it a ton of character and little touches like this on the walls is what brings the whole thing together, right? Get this piece specifically here, on his Etsy store, or send him a message to have something custom made for you!

I put fancy cookbooks in the kitchen to make it seem like I know what I'm doing.

  4. Wire basket — another wall piece I love but it is super practical. Another wood/metal combo that really seems to bring depth to the room while keeping all our junk hidden in plain sight! I have these all over the house, they’re so cool looking no one really ever seems to mind that they’re full of old receipts and toys and how-did-a-hairbrush-get-in-there??? Like most of the finds in my house, I got this at a vintage decor store somewhere in Palmdale, CA but I found this cool one on amazon here

    The elusive Brownie Bite!
  5. Leather furniture — I fell in love with leather furniture a looooong time ago, because my son is a mess magnet and leather is easy to clean with a baby wipe 🙃 BUT it also goes great with the industrial style I’ve got going on in my house! It’s dark and warm and inviting, and it takes 30 seconds to wipe off the ketchup and cereal and stickies off of it to give the illusion that my son actually can get some food into his mouth! I’m partial to sectional couches, but that might not fit your living room, so here’s a few options I found that I love! (sectional) -- (regular)

Would I still love to have an all white decor scheme one day? Sure, but I know when that day comes I probably will no longer be around Abe 24/7 and that is kind of heart breaking — so for now I am embracing the mess, and keeping my sliver of sanity by decorating around it. If you’re a fan of the industrial style or you have your own fave tips/tricks/pieces, leave a comment, I would love to know how you’ve incorporated it into your own home!
P.S. you can always check out my Pinterest for more ideas too-my ‘dream home’ board is chalk full of #industrialdecor !

All my love, Sammi
